Description

 

After a dynamic and engaging first semester at "Musical Ears," we are thrilled to embark on an exciting journey this second semester!

We will be immersing ourselves in the captivating world of diverse music styles, dancing, playing, singing, and crafting unique instruments. We will also use the music studio at the steam lab to create a music Single, where the kids record the instruments and vocals, and we will edit a fun music video of the experience. To guide our adventure, here's a comprehensive curriculum plan spanning the upcoming enriching weeks:

SEMESTER 2

 

**Week 1: Introduction to "Musical Ears"**

- Class Introduction and Icebreaker Activities

- Explanation of the Course's Objectives and Structure

 

**Week 2-3: Exploring Rhythms**

- Introduction to Rhythms: Clapping, Stomping, Drumming

- Basic Rhythms from Different Cultures (e.g., African, Latin)

- Rhythm Games and Activities

 

**Week 4-5: World Music Styles**

- Introduction to Different World Music Styles (e.g., Samba, Reggae, Bollywood)

- Listening and Appreciating Music from Various Cultures

- Dancing to World Music Styles

 

**Week 6-7: Singing Around the World**

- Learning Simple Songs from Different Cultures

- Vocal Techniques and Harmonies

- Singing Together as a Group

 

**Week 8-9: Introduction to World Instruments**

- Overview of Various World Instruments (e.g., Djembe, Sitar, Maracas)

- Building Simple Homemade Instruments

- Playing Basic Tunes on Instruments

 

**Week 10-11: Crafts and Instrument Building**

- Hands-On Craft Activities: Make Maracas, Rainsticks, and Other Instruments

- Decorating and Customizing Crafted Instruments

 

**Week 12-13: Single recorded by the Steam Lab Band!**

- Forming a band, deciding wich song to record

- Principles of recording, singing, and playing to the mic while listening to each other.

- Recording a video of the experience

 

**Week 14-15: Group Performance Preparation**

- Group Rehearsals for a Final Performance

- Selecting Songs, Instruments, and Dance Routines

- Preparing Costumes and Props

 

**Week 16: Final Performance and Celebration**

- Group Performance Showcasing the Music, Dance, and Crafts

- Class Celebration and Sharing of Experiences

- Certificates and Farewell


SEMESTER 2

The program is a progressive series of 21 themed weeks where the kids learn the introductory concepts, listen to music from around the world, and also have special guest talks from some of New York City's leading artists who are also passionate educators.


 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Introduction to the basic elements of music (Harmony, Rhythm, and melody)
2. Ear training
3. Understanding “Form”, the musical structure of a song
4. Introduction and analysis of a variety of music styles ranging from Classical,
World music, Popular music, and Jazz.
5. Learning how the different instruments sound
6. Basic music notation (sight reading)

1. Music listening

3. Introduction to playing small percussions instruments and body percussion
4. Analysis and reflection writing
5. Creative drawing to music
6. Group collab activities

CLASS SCHEDULE

 

 2:30-3:30 pm: Snack, Homework Help, Guided Free Choice
● 3:30-4:00 pm: Music concepts and activities
● 4:00-4:15 pm: Guided Free choice
● 4:15-4:45 pm: Listening activity
● 4:45-5:30 pm: Performance activity
● 5:30-5:45 pm: Free Choice & Parent Pickup

 

Directed by Latin Grammy Nominated artist and composer, Mr. Gabriel Chakarji and Afterschool Collective Founder Jessica Chakarji 

 

Semester: January 8th- June 26th | 21 sessions | $90 per 3.5-hour session for full term bookings ($1890 total)

Drop In: Based on availability | $105 per session

 

Complementary Local Bus Stop Pickup Available for all Semester Students

Ages: 5+ | Classes are held all Mondays except for those days when school is closed. All Afterschool Students receive 10% off on No-School Camp Days at The Afterschool Collective.
