Description


As your child learns about different types of art and the periods in which they were created, students will also be interpreting what they see and creating their own artworks with various mediums. This is student lead series where we tap into the creative passions of each individual student and create a project-based exhibit based on class talents. 

 

The Afterschool Collective is excited to introduce our project based "Art Standards" for creative expression program which provides a detailed look at the goals and expectations set for our program and students.  These standards include but aren't limited to:

 

Introduction to Art

  • Students will explore and experiment with art materials and techniques.

  • Students will begin to learn to describe and explain artistic choices that they make.

  • Students will be introduced to the art room setting.

  • Students will be introduced to new artistic-based vocabulary.

  • Students will analyze patterns of repeated lines, shapes and colors

  • Students will classify colors such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, white and brown

  • Students will identify straight, curved, zig zag, dotted, and wavy lines. Students will also recognize circles, squares, triangles and rectangles in works of art.

 

Mixed Media Art

  • Students will be introduced to the art of collaging, mixed media, materials and artistic techniques.

  • Students will experiment and generate skills in various art-making techniques and approaches through practice.

  • Students will apply formal and conceptual vocabularies of art and design to view surroundings in modern methods through art-making.

  • Students will express personalized ideas, concepts, images, and themes through artistic choices of media, expression, techniques, and subject matter.

 

Introduction to Painting

  • Students will select and apply two-dimensional media, methods, techniques, and procedures to communicate ideas and solve challenging visual art obstacles.

  • Students will mix tempera paint to create a range of 4 values and levels of intensity through their artwork.

  • Students will properly demonstrate blending one color and value smoothly into another.

  • Students will use brushes of various sizes/types.

  • Students will select and use paint expressively

 

Pattern, Rhythm, Movement, Balance, Unity

  • Students will select and apply two-dimensional media, methods, techniques, and procedures to communicate ideas.

  • Students will construct lines, shapes, forms, and colors on a page to create patterned designs.

  • Students will examine different ways of drawing lines to create shapes and patterns.

  • Students will be able to integrate rhythm and movement into patterns.

  • Students will create movement through placement of motion (meaning to: draw or paint lines coming from the object that is moving)

 

Still Life Art

  • Students will select and apply two-dimensional media, methods, techniques, and procedures to communicate ideas.

  • Students will construct a still life project using one object.

  • Students will fill an area with solid color/value using a variation of art mediums. (pencil, markers, crayons, oil pastels, paint, etc.)

  • Students will identify lines, shapes, colors, and patterns in their artwork.

  • Students will demonstrate safe and proper procedures for using materials, tools, and equipment while making art.


Portraits/Self-Portraits

  • Students will select and apply two and three-dimensional media, methods, techniques, and procedures to communicate ideas.

  • Students will create original artwork that communicates ideas about the theme of people.

  • Students will fill an area with solid color/value using a variation of art mediums. (pencil, markers, crayons, oil pastels, paint, etc.)

  • Students will identify lines, shapes, colors, and patterns in their artwork.

  • Students will demonstrate safe and proper procedures for using materials, tools, and equipment while making art.

 

CLASS SCHEDULE

2:30-3:30pm: Snack, Homework Help, and Guided Free Choice

3:30-4:00pm: Warm Up Creative Expression Activity

4:00-5:30pm: Feature Activity

5:30-5:45 pm: Free Choice & Parent Pickup

 

Semester: January 5th-June 22nd, 2023 | 20 sessions | $90 per session for full term bookings ($1800 total)

Drop In: Based on availability | $105 per session

Ages: 5+ | Classes are held on all Thursdays except for those days when school is closed. All Afterschool Students receive 20% off on No-School Camp Days at The Afterschool Collective.
